Final Exam Notification

Hello All,

First of all I want to thank those of you who took the time over Thanksgiving Break to complete the optional assignments.  I appreciate your effort and look forward to seeing what you came up with.  I am continuing to accept assignments up until Monday.

As we look towards Final Exams, I thought I should post a copy of the school's Exam Exemption Letter and policy

Any student who qualifies for Exam Exemption has been given an exempted 0 in the Final Exam Assignment in the Gradebook.  Every student whose Final Exam grade is "Not yet graded" in the gradebook, must take their Final or earn a 0 on 15% of their grade.

As a reminder, grades are still being submitted and projects are being finalized.  Any student who qualified for exemption, if their grade drops below an 80, then their grade will be what they've earned, even if that means lower than 80.  If they choose to come in and take the Final during our Final Exam Period, I will allow them to.

I handed out copies of the Course Extension Contract this week as well.  This is a very important document for students in specific core classes (including World Lit) who end up failing the course by 1-5 points.  I handed this out to students if they could possibly qualify as needing it.  My hope is that none of my students will need it, but I do need it back from every student.

The World Lit Final Exam Study Guide can be found here.

The Yearbook Final Exam Study Guide can be found here.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend.

Thanksgiving Break

Hello All,

As we head into the last 14 days of class, I wanted to give every World Literature student the chance to improve their grades, if they wanted to.

These assignments are 100% optional.  If you choose to do them, please follow all of the instructions completely as that's the only way to add points to your grade -- you are proving to me that you understand the standards assessed.

You may do 0, 1, 2, 3, or all 4 optional assignments.  If you do choose do complete them, they are due on Monday, 12/2/19, before 11:59pm on turnitin.com.  Each assignment should be on a separate google doc.

You can find the link to the assignment here, or on the Student Resources Page.

When we come back, we'll be working quickly to complete our last presentation and then prepare for the Final Exam.

I hope you have a fantastic Thanksgiving Break.

Week 12-13 and Homework

Hello All,

As we move to the second half of unit 3, all Literature classes are in the middle of reading their novels. Honors should be on page 402 of The Poisonwood Bible, while On Level should be on page 62 of Night, when classes return on Wednesday.

I feel like we need to have a conversation about homework. For the most part, with the exception of reading, I typically don't assign specific homework. The expectation is that you should go over what you've learned and finish anything you didn't finish in class. Please make sure that if you didn't finish an assignment in class, that you do follow up at home so you're grade doesn't suffer.

I know I've talked about it in class, but zeros are the number one reason students' grades suffer. Please make sure you're getting your work done and turning it in on time to keep your grade where it needs to be.

As a reminder, I can do early morning tutoring by appointment and every Wednesday I stay until 5pm. Let me know you're coming in advance so I can plan accordingly.

I hope y'all have a great Tuesday.

Week 10-11 Turnitin.com is back up!

Hello All,

World Lit and Honors World Lit classes--let's talk about your assignments.

Turnitin.com is finally back up and we are working towards getting all work submitted and graded.  At this point, yes, you can turn in things late since the blip with technology wasn't anybody's fault, but we need to make sure things to get turned in and graded.

At this point, I've put in zeros for assignments that I am missing from you.  Look carefully at the grades.  If something says not yet graded, then I haven't graded it.  However, if it says 0 or 1 out of 100, and it is a summative grade, then there is a problem that we need to correct.  I'm working hard on my end to catch up and I need you to be doing the same.

Our upcoming major assignments are:

  1. Drafting your chilling narratives.  Peer Revision and Editing Wednesday and Thursday.  Publishing on Monday.  Presentations Wednesday and Thursday.
  2. Drafting your argument essay.  Starting to work on this next week and publishing coming up the week after.

Yearbook, our first true deadline is next week.  Let's make sure you are following the style guide and working towards your goals.

Make Up Picture Day is this Friday.  Anyone who didn't take pictures will have a pass during 2nd and anyone who wants to Retake pictures can do so during their lunch.

Have a great week!

Week 9 Expectations and Upcoming Assignments

Hello All,

In World Lit and Honors World Lit, we've started Unit 3.  Students previewed the 6 major assignments for this unit earlier this week (it's a big one--we broke it into 2 parts) and we are working towards the skills and knowledge necessary for students to be completely prepared for those assignments as we reach them in the upcoming weeks.  You can see a copy of the assignments on the Overview on the Resources Page.

Honors:  This is due when you walk in the door on Friday.  Be prepared and use your class time well.  If you need extra time, you can always take these pages from your book home.  Don't forget that you need to be done with page 142 in Poisonwood Bible by Monday.  (Yes, there will be another quiz.)

  • Finish reading “Two Kinds” on p21-29
  • Answer 1, 3-4, 6-7, 9 on p30-31
  • On a separate sheet of paper, p 32, number 10.
  • P 9-14 -- highlight ideas that help you understand what “cultural identity” means.  Discuss the questions 1-12 with a partner.
  • On a separate sheet of paper, p 17 -- Check your understanding

On Level:  This is due before you leave tomorrow.
  • Finish reading “Two Kinds” on p 21-29
  • Answer 1, 3-4, 6-7, 9 on p 30-31
  • On a separate sheet of paper, p 32, number 10.
Yearbook: Some students are using their time wisely in class and some aren't.  Your grades are starting to reflect your effort.  You have your first spread due at the end of the month.  Please make good choices and stay strong.

Tomorrow is an Early Release Day.  I hope you find the afternoon restful!

September Break and Upcoming Assignments

Hello Students,

Our World Lit and Honors World Lit classes just finished a big week.  Our first Socratic Seminar, a Reading Test, and a Writing Test--all going into the Summative Category.

Turnitin.com is still frustratingly down.  So that means I need all of you to turn in your major writing assignments to Google Classroom for now so I can grade them there.  Follow the instructions on each assignment.  Please bare with me as we work through this technological breakdown.

Our next unit will focus on Cultural Perspectives from around the world.  We'll be having reading assessments as we go through the readings, but we'll also be working towards a narrative and an argument paper, as well as a presentation.  Exciting things!

On Level classes should still be reading a personal choice book.

Honors classes, when we get back from break we'll begin reading Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver as a parallel text to what we read in class.  This means, I need you to obtain a copy -- digital or physical, rented or bought, up to you -- and you'll have reading targets each week so that we can have our discussions in class.  You will be completing a Major Works Data Sheet on this text.  You are not assigned to read it over the break, but if you choose to read ahead so that you'll have less homework each night when we get back, that choice is yours to make.

Yearbook classes, your first mod is due today.  As we discussed in class, if you don't have your things on the page before midnight, you're earning a zero until you do, and when your content is on the page, the best score you can earn is 50.  You've had weeks.  You know what's expected of you.  I've also assigned you your next spread.  Make sure you look at the topic on the ladder and know what you are going to cover.  Start thinking about your plan.

All Classes: When we do return from the break, I have been summoned for Jury Duty.  As you know, this can be a short or a long summons.  However, as I told the students in class today, my lesson plans are the same whether they tell me I have to go to the courthouse or not.  Any time I am in class or not, I have spent time and effort into creating meaningful instruction and learning for you.  There are no free days--we are always practicing a skill to help you meet the standard.

I hope you have a fantastic Fall Break.

Week 7, Socratic Seminar and Deadlines

Hello All!

This week is a pretty big week.

Honors and On Level World Lit, your first Socratic Seminar is tomorrow.  Make sure you come to the discussion prepared by having the questions answered before you walk in the door.  You can see a copy of the questions and the rubric on the resources page.  Remember, the Socratic Seminar will help you to discuss things that will be on the test on Thursday.  Be prepared.

Yearbook, your first deadline is officially Friday.  You absolutely need to have your pictures and quotes in eDesign before the end of the day on Thursday so that we can do final touches in class.  If you are not done before you leave, you'll earn a 0 and late work has a maximum grade of 50.  I've already extended this deadline, so you have had time.  Be prepared.

There's a lot of major grades going on so we can start fresh after the break.  Do your best until the end!

Week 6

Hello All,

We have big things coming up in our classes as we're closing out this grading period.

Honors:

We're finishing up our Oedipus part of the unit and doing final filming on Monday (although if they're done and uploaded to Youtube before Monday, I'll be very happy) as well as going through Hero's Journey.  We're moving into the other half of the unit as we do a dive into types of plots and getting ready for our Synthesis Argument Essay.  Don't forget that you have 2 MWDS due next Friday.  Make sure you're keeping up with your notebook as our test is coming up.

On Level:

We're finishing up the types of plots and Hero's Journey part of the unit on Monday.  We'll be moving into the other half of the unit, Oedipus, as we get ready for our Synthesis Argument Essay.  Make sure you're keeping up with your notebook as our test is coming up.

Yearbook:

You've been assigned your first pages and your Mods need to be turned in by the last day of the month.  Remember, if you turn them in early, I'll check them and give you immediate feedback for you to fix for free.  If you wait until they're due and I have to fix them, then you'll loose points.

You do have a quiz grade due by the end of the day on Monday to add the portraits template, the pink divider lines template, and a mod that matches the number of green boxes in your designated space (in the search bar type the number across x the number down without spaces and hit enter. ie: 4x5, 13x3).  The templates you need are at the bottom of the template tab in eDesign.  You can look at finished examples:

  • Pages 22-23: 26x3 mod (since Band is a big subject, going across the whole spread is a good idea)
  • Page 27: 13x3 mod (a half spread mod)
  • Page 37: 6x7 mod (a cut out from the inside of the portraits)
Remember, don't cut portraits without paying attention to where the names are going to be.  Keep the pink spacers on for now and make sure they touch the portrait boxes as well as the mod edges--never change the thickness of the pink line.  If you need help with this, we can talk about it on Monday, but you need to turn yours in before the end of the day Monday.

This will help you know how big your final product for the spread will be.  How many action pictures?  How many captions?

Be prepared.  We're going to create our rules for a good caption next week and all hands need to be on deck for Picture Day on Friday.

I hope you have a great weekend!

Expectations for Friday

Hello Students!

Tomorrow we'll have a pep rally during 4th.  In order to maximize our time before the 3 day weekend, please make sure you do the following:

Directions:

Honors World Lit:

  • Sit in your groups.
  • First 10-15 minutes:  You should begin to define and familiarize yourself with the next 25 words in your 100 Words Every High School Student Should Know list.  I highly recommend [emphasis] that you write down the definitions and/or examples of use in your vocabulary notebook.
  • Next 30-40 minutes:  In your group, your job today is to talk about the book you have been reading in/out of class.  Using the handout, to direct your questions, the goal of this talk is to familiarize yourself with potentially interesting books for you in the future.
  • By the end of the 1st half of class, you should be able to complete the handout.
  • Next 30-40 minutes:  Using your phones, work on your scripts for Oedipus.  Make sure your ideas will mesh with the other groups for your play (1, 2, & 3.  4, 5, & 6).  Keep the theme and characterization the same!
  • Last 10 minutes:  Read your independent reading.
  • (Have you been working on your Treasure Island MWDS?  Have you started one for Oedipus?)

Yearbook  In Room 807

  • Have a round table discussion today. Keep the discussion positive and extremely productive.
  • During this, someone should be the recorder to keep a record of these ideas.  Doing this digitally in the Drive would be a good idea.
  • Is there a mod or set of mods that we want to have in every page that could help us tie our Story together? This would need to be something that is versatile, could apply to every single page in the book. Yesi, Jaya, explain the examples from last year. It is up to you if you want to use one specifically, different ones for different sections, a choice from a list, y'all have a ton of options, I want specifics. Make that decision.
  • How do we want to organize the sports section? Make that decision.
  • How do we want to organize the Clubs section? Make that decision.
  • Discuss the Academics plan with the portaits. What mod template can we use for each subject area? Make that decision. (Academic might be what we need to start on. Are there 12 topics we could use for our first deadline? If not… )
  • What 12 spreads of the Yearbook contain ideas that can be completed during the month of September?
  • What senior superlatives do we want to use? Dr. Walker needs to approve the list, so we need to brainstorm it quickly.
  • What else are things we need to discuss right now?
World Lit:
  • No class due to Pep Rally!
I hope you all have a wonderful day and an amazing weekend.

Week 4

Hello All,

This week is a little weird, so I thought it would be good to give you a head's up.

Wednesday -- Early Release at 12:30 11:30 (I apologize for the typo).  Buses will run at that time.  You will visit every class that day.
Thursday -- Campbell Connections Schedule for 4th block.  (I'm told this will be between 3rd and 4th block.)
Friday -- Pep rally.  Again, shorter classes but you should see everyone.
Monday -- No school.  Labor Day.

World Lit classes have a vocab quiz over the first 25 words on Thursday.  Honors classes should be finished with Treasure Island and ready for an assessment Tuesday after Labor Day.

Yearbook class, we must have a basic ladder before Thursday because you need to have your first assignment by then.  Also, remember starting tomorrow, we'll be meeting in 807.

I will not be here on Friday and you all know I expect you to work awesomely for the sub.  I'll email your instructions through Synergy on Thursday so you can check their for your responsibilities in addition to what I leave for the sub.

Have a great week!

Open House Thursday 8/22/19

Hello and Welcome, wonderful parents.

Thursday night is our Open House starting at 6pm in the Gwyn-McClure Gym (the new gym).

Since I am the Yearbook Adviser, I'll be at a table in the Cafeteria selling yearbooks ($70 and we are half-way to sold out--if you wanted to get one, now is a good time).  Of course you can stop by for a quick hello.

If you'd like to meet me in a sit down meeting to discuss your child's progress, I would love to meet you.  Please email me at kimberly [dot] bundschu [at] cobbk12 [dot] org to arrange a time (before school or during lunchtime is the best time).

If you'd just like to touch base, email is the best and fastest way to contact me.  Any questions or concerns are welcome.

If you'd like to see a copy of our Syllabus:

If you are interested in sending (and/or joining) our trip to Spain during September Break 2021 (next year), the brochure can be found here and you can email Marisa [dot] Braxton [at] cobbk12 [dot] org with any questions (she's the lead contact behind the trip).  The deadline for reserving your spot is coming quickly.  It's a $95 deposit to reserve a spot, but the rest of the money is due about 60 days before the trip, and there is both a payment plan, and a link that you can send to friends and family to fund raise if you'd like to.

Finally, if you want to help out our class, we do need some donations to help.  If you'd like to bring any of the following, we would love to have:

  • Box of Tissue
  • Markers (Crayola 10 multi-color)
  • White Liquid Elmer’s Glue
  • Pencils
  • Pens: blue, black, colored
  • Pencil Sharpener
  • Hand Sanitizer (alcohol base so it kills viruses, not just bacteria)
  • Lotion
  • Band-Aids and First Aid Supplies
  • Sanitary Napkins
  • Treasure Box Donations: in our classes students are rewarded with tickets that they can spend in the class treasure box. There are nice pens, candy, earbuds, notepads, fun carnival prize toys, and much more! If you have anything you would like to donate to this for our positive rewards in class program, please feel free to donate.

Week 2

Hello All,

This week has been a busy week in our classes.

Honors are finished reading The Kite Runner and are working hard on completing their Major Works Data Sheet (due tomorrow on turnitin.com).  They also started their first essay based on How to Read Literature Like a Professor.

On Level should be finished reading Chinese Cinderella and their Dialectical Journals are due tomorrow on turnitin.com.  We will also have an in-class essay on Friday.

Yearbook is working hard on team building and organization of both content and our team.  We'll have a short quiz over basic vocabulary terms on Monday and next week we'll have a book assignment on Ethics and a photography project.

Once I get the go ahead from admin, grades will start popping up in the gradebook.

If you're interested, there's a Interest Meeting at 6:30 tonight in Ms. Braxton's room (900 hall) for going to Spain next year during one of the breaks.  It would be awesome to see you there and this gives you a year to get the funds together.

Open House is on 8/22 and I would love to meet you, but will be selling yearbooks in the cafeteria.  If you would like to talk to me, email is best and most efficient, or you can let me know if you'd like a parent/teacher/student conference and we can put that on the schedule.

I hope you're having a great week!

Week 1

Hello All!

I am so happy to have all of you in my classes.  Thank you for helping us to start the year right with a positive foot forward.

A little bit about this blog.  These updates are just communications on what is going on in our classes.  The calendars on the tabs (or dropdown menu) have major assignments and due dates.  The Resources pages are specific links to all of the materials you need for the class.  Some links you'll need to login in order to see it, depending on what information is posted.

If you need an extra copy of the syllabus, you can find it on the Resources page throughout the semester, but also linked below:

World Lit
Yearbook

This week in World Lit were digging into the Precourse Reading, working on the skills you need to complete the Dialectical Journal (On Level) or the Major Works Data Sheet (Honors) (due next Friday).

In Yearbook, we're familiarizing ourselves with each other and the basics of what makes a yearbook good so that we can start developing our theme.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, the best way to reach me is through email: kimberly [dot] bundschu [at] cobbk12 [dot] org.

Have a great week!

Getting Ready for the New Year

Hello Everyone,

I know it might feel like we just got out of school for summer, but the end is nigh and it is a good idea to make sure you are prepared for the new year.

The official copy of the assignment is on the main school website, but here is a easy to digest version.

On Level World Literature Classes:

Honors World Literature Classes:

  • Read The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (May be purchased from local bookstores, downloaded online, or checked out from a local library)
  • Finish reading before the first day of school.  Trigger Warning: this book, while a work of fiction, does deal with real world problems, including assault.
  • We will start the year with lessons and assessments based on the pre-course reading.
  • Assignment: Major Works Data Sheet (to be submitted to turnitin.com).
  • Click here for a Major Works Data Sheet template that you should use with detailed instructions of what I'm looking for.  Yes, it is long.  Yes, I do expect you to complete it.
  • Read How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster, Chapters 1, 4, 6, and 10.
  • Assignment:
    • Chapter One - “Every Trip is a Quest” : Write a 1 ½ to 2 page essay in MLA format (11 font, Ariel, double spaced, work cited page) outlining each of the five elements of a quest and then applying them to Amir in The Kite Runner.
    • Chapter Four - “Now Where Have I Seen Her Before”: Summarize the chapter by defining and then explaining intertextuality. Indicate and then explain TWO (2) examples from one literary work to another literary work OR one literary work to a movie.
    • Chapter Six: “…Or the Bible”: Write a brief summary of the chapter focusing on the central message. Then find an example of a Biblical allusion in a literary work (excluding the works mentioned in How to Read Literature Like a Professor)and then explain how the allusion enhances your understanding of the text.
    • Chapter Ten: - “Never Stand Next to the Hero”:
      • A. Explain the differences between round and flat characters.
      • B. What point is the author making when he says, “Never stand next to the hero?”
      • C. Identify and then how this fits with an example from literature OR a movie.
  • You will take a test during the first two weeks of the semester.
I know it might seem like a lot, so make sure you start reading the books now and looking for those memorable quotes.

I'm looking forward to meeting you all in August!

Final Countdown

Hello All!

We only have 20 more days of class.  I'm so pleased with how hard most of you have been working to bring up your grades and keep them high.  Thank you for all your hard work.

In the upcoming weeks we only have a few major assignments left, and several small assignments that help build your knowledge so you do well on the big grades.  Right now we're working on our College and Career Senior Projects, due 4/29, and learning about Literary Criticisms to prepare for the Socratic Seminar and Final Exam.

All major assignments (with the exception of the Socratic Seminar which is a performance task) are due before 4/30.  That means all make up work and the College and Career Project.  No major assignments will be accepted after that time (I need time to grade them fairly and give you the grade you've earned).

You will know if you have exempted the Final Exam on 5/8.

Our Senior Finals are:

3rd and 4th Tuesday May 14th
1st and 2nd Wednesday May 15th.

I've added the dates and times of Graduation Practice and Graduation to the calendar.

Congratulations as we enter the Final Countdown!

Spring Break and Assignment Update

Hello All!

I am so proud of how hard so many of you worked this week to get your responsibilities done and bring up your grades.  I know that I am feeling so much more comfortable with where y'all stand going into these last 28 days of high school.

Make sure you've checked your grades.  I love how many of you have been using the opportunity to submit, get feedback, and submit again.  Your grades reflect your effort to get things done in a timely manner.

I've graded all Photo Essays that have been submitted to me.  If your grade is a 0, I don't have it and I need it by the end of Spring Break if you want to earn credit.  If your grade is a 1, please fix the issue we've discussed preventing you from earning credit and resubmit it by the end of Spring Break.  If you don't, you'll keep the grade you've earned.

I've graded all Reflective Essays that have been submitted to me.  At the end of the class, I'll be putting in the zeros if you haven't turned it in yet (it was due on Wednesday).  You'll need to complete it and turn it in by the end of Spring Break if you want to earn credit.

By your request, I've compiled a completely optional list of grade recovery activities.  This is specifically for students who are not happy with their current grade in the class as these assignments can add to your grade on the specific assignments listed.  You may do 3, 2, 1, or none of the assignments.  Your effort will depend on how many points are added to your grade (up to 20) and you cannot get more than 100 on any assignment using these activities.  You can find the link to the assignments here, and, of course, on the Resources Page.  I know many of you don't need it, but I wanted to give you the opportunity.

I hope you have a fantastic Break!

Photo Essay

Hello All!

I am so happy looking at the Photo Essays that many of you have already submitted--they look great!

For those of you who haven't earned points yet, please work on what we've talked about and turn it in ASAP.  Those zeros become permanent at the end of these 6 weeks.  Don't wait until then, because before Spring Break you also have your Reflective Essay we've been working towards.

I hope you have a fantastic weekend.

Close of the First Grading Period

Hello All,

We've had a fantastic 1/3 of the semester so far.  I am so happy to have every single one of you in class and am please with your overall progress.

However, I know that some of you aren't happy with the grades you've earned on the Precourse Reading Dialectical Journal and/or the Socratic Seminar.  In that case, I have an opportunity for you!

This assignment is completely optional--no, you do not have to do it--but if you want to help your grade, I suggest you do.

You can find a copy of the assignment here and on the Resources Page.

It is due on Turnitin.com on March 1st.  Since this is an opportunity, I will not be accepting it late.

I hope you have a fantastic February Break.

Week 3 -- Open House

Hello Students and Parents,

On Thursday, we're having our Open House.  As the Yearbook Adviser, I'll be in the cafeteria selling our Yearbook in the cafeteria.  If you'd like to speak to me specifically about the class, the best way to communicate with me is through email or you can come down to the cafeteria for a brief conversation.

This week in Multi Lit we're finishing up our Precourse Reading, turning in the Dialectical Journal to turnitin.com and having a Socratic Seminar before starting to work with our Springboard texts.

Our Yearbook class is in crunch mode as we work hard to complete our pages for printing.  The assignments and deadlines are in the gradebook so you can see what's coming up.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out.  I stay late on Wednesdays (with the exception of today due to an unexpected appointment) and love it when students email me.

Happy Wednesday!

Week 2

Hello All,

In Multi Lit this week, we've been working through our Precourse Reading of Between the World and Me and completing our Dialectical Journals, which are due on turnitin.com.  Yesterday in class I did tell students to get through page 100 by Thursday.  There may be a quiz tomorrow.  Be prepared!

In Yearbook, our first hard deadline is this Friday.  Pages must be in Presubmit before the end of the day on Friday, no more corrections, no more missing information or pictures.  Remember, it's 50% off if you are late.

Have a great Wednesday!

Welcome to the New Year!

Hello All!

I'm so glad that you are in my class this semester!

To start, I'd like to give you a little tour of this blog.

This tab is Weekly Updates--it's just a head's up of what's happening in the class this week.  For example, this week we're getting used to the class environment and starting the Precourse Reading Dialectical Journal that will be due next Friday, 1/18/19, on turnitin.com.

The next tab is the Resources Page.  This page is where all of the links used for the class will be posted, including the Syllabus, and copies of assignments, presentations, notes, etc.  This is the most useful tab for the class.

The next tab is the Classroom Calendar.  This is the head's up for major due dates and what's going on in the class.

My email and phone number are listed above (written out so that I don't get spam).  If you ever have any questions, please feel free.

I am looking forward to an amazing year!
